VENICE, A PAINTING

By Ann Clinton

Paintings large and small
Frame a white-washed wall
Italy, yes Italy, Venice for sure
Scenes of urban beauty pure
Lagoons a geographic creation
Venice a city of adaptation
Canals meander where streets should be
Walkways and footbridges a necessity
Vaporetos a familiar sight
Plying the canals day and night
A newcomer soon surmises
Venice holds many surprises

President’s letter

Greetings to all! The next several months are going to be incredibly busy and exciting for our chapter and we need your support.

This year’s Career Day initiative will take place Monday, February 26th, at St. John’s University. This project will expose women to new career possibilities, offering them career ideas that could help them realize their full potential. Many may not be aware of the wide range of occupations available to them, and the women comprising The Sisterhood will work together to help those attending.

At our Tuesday, February 20th, dinner/meeting, under our program Women Helping Women, we will make a presentation to Wishes of Literacy with founder Wendy Ramos. Wishes of Literacy is Staten Island’s only non-profit learning center dedicated to helping children who struggle to read and learn because of Dyslexia and other learning disabilities.

On Saturday March 8th, our Historian, Virginia Allen, and her committee are planning a Legacy Tea to mark the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in New York State. New York was one of the first states in the country to pass legislation giving women the right to vote in 1917, three years before the 19th amendment was passed. To celebrate this landmark, and to honor women in history, our chapter is inviting all women’s organizations on Staten Island to participate in an event to celebrate the “Legacy of Women.” This is another interesting committee. I encourage you to attend.

Our chapter’s premier annual event/fundraiser, our Women of Distinction Luncheon, is coming up quickly, on Sunday, April 8th. We have an amazing group of honorees this year. This is an exciting and busy time for our event co-chairs, Margaret Antoniello, Cammie Bradofino, Diane Seridge and their committee. This is a huge project and I am sure additional member support is needed. To work with this amazing trio please contact them. Remember, this event brings in much of the funds that allow us to help others each year, and our team needs your support.

So, as you can see, there are a lot of exciting things happening – plus more! I look forward to seeing you!

Please remember that you as a member make the chapter. I strongly encourage you to join at least one committee. Your talent and support helps increase the impact of our chapter.

Thank you,
Christine Olivieri-Donahue
President

February General Meeting

One and All we are reaching out for nominees to fill the officer positions in our Chapter. If you would like to volunteer or would like to recommend someone for any of the positions, please contact Rosemarie Dressler at 718-984-1739 or Virginia Allen at 718-448-5183 or Cammie Brandofino at 917-755-8400 for additional information. This information is needed at our February 20th meeting because we will be voting on these positions at our March 20th meeting.

At our February 2018 meeting we will be presenting a check in the amount of $1000 to the Wishes of Literacy program recommended by Rosemarie Mangano.
Wishes of Literacy was formed in 2010 by Wendy Ramos to help children with Dyslexia and Learning Disabilities.

Their mission

· To raise awareness of dyslexia.

· To help parents through workshops, education, and support.

· To help children by bringing programs to our community, in our schools, and eventually to start a school on Staten Island designed to support their learning needs and styles. Wishes of Literacy is Staten Island’s only non-profit learning center dedicated to helping children who struggle to read and learn because of dyslexia and learning differences.

(SAVE THE DATE) On March 3, 2018 we will have a Women in History luncheon in honor of the 100th Anniversary of the Women’s Suffrage Movement. Contact Virginia Allen who is chairing this event if you would like to be part of this project.

(SAVE THE DATE) Women of Distinction – Our luncheon will be on April 8, 2018.

Women of Distinction Luncheon: Sunday, April 8

As you know, this year’s Women of Distinction Luncheon will held at noon on Sunday, April 8th, at LiGreci’s Staaten. To support the luncheon we need every member to solicit journal ads and gift certificates for the auction. Attached is a letter for you to copy and bring to establishments you frequent.

Restaurants, spas, salons, accounts, dry cleaners etc. are often very happy to give their support with a gift certificate or place an ad at the request of a loyal patron.

Remember that proceeds from this event will support scholarships and initiatives that foster the personal growth of local women.

Thank you for your support,

Haddock Poached in Tomato Sauce

2 pounds Haddock or Cod
3 TBS. olive oil
2 TBS. finely chopped shallots
2 tablespoons finely chopped garlic
3/4 cup dry white wine
1 cup fresh tomatoes, peeled, seeded and cut coarsely 1 pound Italian style canned tomatoes
1/2 cup fresh basil leaves, coarsely ripped
1/4 cup fresh chopped Italian parsley
1 teaspoon dry oregano
1/2 teaspoon sugar
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
1 cup fish stock or water
Red pepper flakes to taste

In a large frying pan, add olive oil, shallots and garlic.
Cook over low flame for five to 8 minutes after it starts simmering. Do not let shallots and garlic brown.

Add white wine and reduce over high flame by half. Add tomatoes stir and cook over medium flame for 10 minutes, uncovered after the tomatoes come to a simmer.

Cut haddock or cod into 4 inch squares, season with salt and pepper on both sides.

Lower flame to a simmer under tomato sauce and add fresh herbs and seasonings. Place fish in a single layer gently into tomato sauce, cover and cook about 10 minutes or until fish is no longer translucent and is cooked through.
Spoon some sauce over the top of the fish while it is cooking. If too dry add a little fish stock. Taste for seasoning and plate using a soup type bowl. Garnish with sprigs of parsley or fresh basil.

Bay Street Revelation

By Ann Clinton

The cloudless sky was a perfect blue and provided a clear palette for the gray spire reaching high into the sky. The red door stood in direct contrast to the somber dark gray edifice. The red door perhaps a signal to STOP and visit.

Riding along the busy thoroughfare one is aware of ethnic restaurants, antique shops, the ever popular cell phone stores, convenience stores and pizza places. Drive on just a little farther and you will be rewarded with what could be a scene in Oxford or Cambridge, England. But this is Staten Island and the building is St. John’s Episcopal Church with the tall spire and the red door.

Alongside the church is a lovely garden – small, yet seeming to include a diversity of flora. Sometimes hidden by the greenery are several statues, darkened with age, representing the biblical history of the church. The property includes a manse for the Rector. But, while aged both are strong, proud reflections of days gone by, still important today.

At the end of a long driveway which divides the church and manse stands a new building. Six stories of brick, an imposing structure with wide windows on each floor and over the main doorway the name on the building reads: Canterbury.

Oh, and if you happen to stop at the red door and go inside the church, you will find, among other things, a large interior with center altar, upholstered pews, stained glass windows and to the left Our Lady’s Chapel.

The congregation is as diverse as the many varieties of flowers in the garden.

President’s letter

Dear Members,
We hope you have had a wonderful holiday season! Now, it is January and that time
when many of us reassess our busy lives and think about what we want to accomplish or
do during the next year.
For many of us, life is whizzing by. The New Year offers a good time to work at slowing
down. This could involve eating slower, which means not in a car or train. It can also
mean using this as a sort of meditative time. It could involve single-tasking instead of
multitasking – thinking about what you’re doing more often, taking time to listen to
everything around you, or feel the breeze on your skin.
Creating New Year’s resolutions can help to develop a Life Plan for success. Here is
hoping that we will bring renewed energy to every aspect of our lives in 2018, to career, to
relationships, and to the Staten Island chapter.
I hope that the Staten Island Chapter will play a special part of your 2018. The work that
will be accomplished can greatly enrich you and our community.
I wish everyone a Healthy and Happy New Year!

Sincerely,

Christine Olivieri Donahue

President
