VENICE, A PAINTING

By Ann Clinton

Paintings large and small
Frame a white-washed wall
Italy, yes Italy, Venice for sure
Scenes of urban beauty pure
Lagoons a geographic creation
Venice a city of adaptation
Canals meander where streets should be
Walkways and footbridges a necessity
Vaporetos a familiar sight
Plying the canals day and night
A newcomer soon surmises
Venice holds many surprises

Holiday Greetings
By Ann Clinton

It is now December

A month to remember

With greetings of good cheer
Proclaiming the holiday is near
Fresh wreaths and colorful lights
Brighten the cold winter nights
Carolers singing of peace and joy
Children delighting in a brand new toy
Inside the aromas of cookies and cakes
Outside falling snow in delicate flakes
And a wish that is timeless and true
Happy, healthy holidays to all of you!

Halloween

Long walks in the cool night breeze

Listening to the wind ruffling the trees

Looking at the stars twinkling and bright

In the October full moon night

Complete with the symbols of the season

Pumpkins, witches, ghosts and goblins the reason

A festive time of year

Adds to the feeling of good cheer

HALLOWEEN is here!

Sand and sea, a perfect beach day

By Ann Clinton

The day was picture perfect
A cool sunny day at the beach in September
The ocean was shades of blue and green
The tint of azure governed by the wind, waves and sun
It was a liquid palette of forever motion
The wind rippling the rhythmic waves as they
Raced to kiss the sand, flirting for just a moment
And then drawing back as they return to their depth
To repeat the process
The forever moment – everything the same and everything different
People walking, people idling in the sun-kissed sand
Which is cooler now with the coming autumn breezes
A cloudless sky except for just a feather cloud
Lonely up above
In the northern distance, not clouds but colors
Soft and blended evidence of mankind
Every once in a while, the naturalness broken
By the distant sound of the huge metallic
Bird high up in a cloudless sky its destination unknown

MAY BOUQUET
By Ann M. Clinton

A soft wind wafted through the curtained open window
Sending the scent of a light perfume into the room
It is May so the natural perfume from the flower garden
Cannot be hyacinths or daffodils – it is too early for roses
But, yes, it is exactly time for lilacs
Leafy, lacy lilacs so delicate, so fragile are yet the possessors
Of a most beautiful and unforgettable scent
Many a lilac bush is strategically placed near a house window
Or a walkway just so someone, a passerby perhaps, can enjoy
The scented air of a spring day
Often lilacs will be joined by a gathering of lilies of the valley whose
Small white bell-shaped flowers add to the May bouquet and whose
Soft scent will compliment their companion lilacs
As one walks further along the walkway, the scents lighten and are
Replaced not by “scent-sory” delights but by visual beauties of
Remaining early spring tulips of red and yellow and the whites
And pinks of the flowering trees
A bouquet of beauty
nature’s gift to those who choose to enjoy it.

A luncheon has been planned

Invitations mailed, now in hand

Arrangements in the making

Reservtions we are taking

Menus have been selected

Table centerpieces perfected

Baskets of goodies and cheer

Who will be a winner this year?

Our guests have been seated

And by our president greeted

Honorees on the program noted

Their speeches may be quoted

Tea and coffee have been served

Accolades are well deserved

A GEM OF A FULL MOON

By Ann M. Clinton

It was about suppertime when
I happened to look out the window
And was awed by the sight outside.
A surreal vision was unfolding before my eyes.
In the “V” of the tree outside my window,
An apricot-orange full moon was perfectly placed.
Two main branches formed the “V” surrounded
By many smaller branches creating a fan-like appearance.
Looking at the moon in front of me, I was reminded of a
pendant on a necklace – a beautiful original piece of jewelry.
The vision began to change as the moon slowly moved
Out of the tree, changing color from soft apricot-orange
To bright orange and finally to pale gold.
The color transformation was accompanied by the moon’s
Riding higher and higher into the darkened sky.
As it moved higher, the moon’s glow lighted the sky
Turning it into a wonderful moonlit night.
It was so bright, we sat down to dinner by moonlight!!
